A nanny is a child-care specialist whose workplace is a family’s private home. A nanny is employed by a family to provide the highest level of customized child care and to give personalized attention to the family’s children. A nanny may be employed full time or part time, and the nanny may or may not live with the family. The nanny’s role is to provide support to the family by serving as a loving, nurturing and trustworthy companion to the children.
A nanny will have specialized child care skills, a deep understanding of the childcare process and a genuine love of caring for children. A nanny offers the family convenient and consistent high quality child care by meeting each child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual needs.
Live-out Nannies
Full-time or Part-Time Live-out Nannies work right in your home, caring for your children and tending to all of their needs. They
shop for healthy foods, and can plan and cook tasty and nutritious meals. Nannies see that the breakfasts and lunches they serve are not only well-balanced, but also appealing to your children. Many Nannies keep a file of recipes the children like and at mealtimes they help teach table manners. Nannies wash the children’s breakfast and lunch dishes and clean up the kitchen or dining room. When caring for infants, Nannies prepare formula or reserved breast milk and sterilize bottles. As a rule, nannies do not cook for the whole family, but some do start dinner preparations.
Nannies can wash, iron, and mend the children’s clothing. They help older children learn to choose outfits that are right for the occasion and they teach the youngsters to keep closets and drawers neat. Nannies do not necessarily do family laundry, but that is something that can be discussed with the individual nanny.
Supervising toddlers during bath time is another duty of Nannies, as is bathing babies and changing their diapers. Nannies help with hair combing, shoe-tying, and homework. They put Band-Aids on scraped knees, take care of sick children, and follow the physician’s instructions in giving medicine.
Planning safe amusement, both indoors and out, is a large part of a Nanny’s job. They devise and play games that are suitable for the ages of the children. They closely monitor television viewing and they help youngsters learn how to both play alone and get along with others. They may plan and oversee birthday parties and other social events. All Nannies read to their children; some sing. They give infants the rocking and cuddling so vital to normal growth and they soothe the hurt feelings of older children. Perhaps most importantly, they make children feel secure while their parents are away from home.
Nannies do not necessarily do general housework, but they do pick up after the children. They teach their charges to take care of their own belongings and they discipline the children in ways that follow the wishes of the parents. Nannies drive the children to lessons or to appointments and they may also take over car pool duties. Sometimes Nannies also run errands for the family. When the whole family takes a trip, the Nanny often travels with them.
Live-In Nannies
Live-In nannies share the same responsibilities as a live-in nanny but they live live in the families home. The hourly rate is typicallylower hourly salary rate because they receive room and board. Busy families who need childcare beyond the tupical 8am-6pm hours, parent’s who travel often, and those with very young children benefit greatly from a live-in arrangement.
Nanny Managers
Nanny Managers are warm, enthusiastic caregivers hired by a private family to care for the family’s children, either on a live-in or live-out basis. These are professional caregivers who, along with general Nanny responsibilities (see above), can pick up the children from school, organize after-school activities, tutor, run errands, grocery shop, provide mature supervision and security while traveling, and pull together a basic evening meal following the family’s favorite recipes. Training and experience are required, and the caregivers usually have a Bachelor’s or more advanced degree in a field related to childcare services.

House Manager
The House Manager combines the dual responsibilities of a nanny/housekeeper caring for a family’s children and for the upkeep of their home. The nanny/housekeeper typically works in an environment where the family’s children spend a significant amount of time out of the home, such as spending the mornings at school. The nanny/housekeeper’s childcare responsibilities include full supervision of children while they are in the home, attention to their meals, dressing, and hygiene. The nanny/housekeeper’s housekeeping responsibilities include daily making of beds and general straightening out of living spaces, washing the children’s laundry and bedding, dusting and polishing furniture, sweeping, and mopping floors, maintaining a clean and tidy bathroom, vacuuming, and other tasks.
The nanny/housekeeper may occasionally clean ovens, refrigerators, and wax floors; they may do parent’s laundry and bedding; and they may run family errands. They may also supervise outside vendors in the home (carpet cleaning, window washing, plumbing, etc.).
A nanny/housekeeper may work eight to ten hours per day, generally five days per week. A nanny/housekeeper will generally expect two consecutive days off weekly. A nanny/housekeeper may live in or live out. The nanny/housekeeper works under the minimal supervision of the adult members of the family and must be a self-starter, show sound judgment, be committed to the well-being of children, and be able to take initiative. Please note this service is only available to families with school-age children.
Housekeeper
Housekeepers clean private homes, buy food, cook and serve meals, and do laundry for family members. Some housekeepers work for several households, spending one or two days a week with each one. These housekeepers are called day workers. Other housekeepers work full time for one family.
The duties of individual domestic housekeepers vary widely. Some have complete responsibility and authority to plan and carry out many household duties. Others are given very specific duties and are closely supervised. Housekeepers may plan, cook, and serve meals and clean up after food is eaten. They may buy food and household supplies. Sometimes they care for children, helping them to eat, dress, and bathe.
Domestic housekeepers may clean floors, windows, furniture, and other areas. They make beds and change linens. They may wash, iron, and mend clothes and linens. Sometimes housekeepers perform such services as answering the telephone, receiving visitors, and exercising pets.
Multiples Specialist
A multiples specialist is a nanny who has extensive experience caring for multiples and who works with families who have twins, triplets or higher order multiples. They perform the same duties as a regular nanny, but with the added bonus of being specialists in the area of caring for multiple children at one time.
